Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
