The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
