Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
