Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers growing in power within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his debts and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires retribution.
  • The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as important members in the influential clan could assist the team access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control the city for a multiple motives, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which characters will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
