Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
